Why Trees?

Trees Are One of
Nature's Best Tools

Planting trees is one of the most powerful and cost-effective ways to fight climate change, protect biodiversity, and improve quality of life for communities across Delaware and beyond.

"A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in." — Greek Proverb

💨
Cleaner Air
A single tree absorbs up to 48 lbs of CO₂ per year and filters harmful particulates from the air.
🦋
Biodiversity
Trees support hundreds of species of birds, insects, and mammals — restoring Delaware's ecosystems.
💧
Water & Soil
Tree roots stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and slow water runoff — protecting Delaware's waterways.
🧠
Community Health
Studies show greener neighborhoods have lower rates of stress, anxiety, and depression among residents.
How It Works

From Planning
to Planting

We take a structured, community-driven approach — every tree we plant is carefully selected, properly planted, and monitored to ensure it thrives for decades.

1
📋
Planning and Organization
We identify ideal planting locations with DNREC and local partners, selecting trees best suited to each site's soil and conditions.
2
📚
Education and Training
Volunteers are trained on proper planting techniques, tree care, and the ecological importance of each tree we plant.
3
🌳
Tree Planting Event
Community members come together to plant trees at designated sites across Delaware — from neighborhoods to public roadsides.
4
🔍
Maintenance and Monitoring
We revisit every planting site, monitor tree health, and ensure long-term survival to maximize lasting environmental impact.
Our Impact

Real Trees. Real Change.

Every number represents a living tree growing somewhere in Delaware right now — cleaning air, sheltering wildlife, and fighting climate change.

💨
Improves Air Quality
Trees absorb pollutants and filter particulates out of the air by trapping them on their leaves and bark, creating cleaner air for Delaware communities.
🌍
Reduces Carbon Footprint
Trees are effective carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it as carbon in their biomass — each mature tree absorbs ~48 lbs of CO₂ per year.
🦋
Enhances Biodiversity
Trees provide habitat, food, and protection for a wide variety of animals and plants, increasing ecosystem diversity across Delaware.
🌡️
Regulates Climate
Trees help moderate temperatures by creating a cooling effect through shade and evapotranspiration, reducing the need for air conditioning.
💧
Controls Water Runoff and Erosion
Tree roots stabilize the soil and their canopies help reduce runoff during rainfall, preventing erosion and protecting Delaware's waterways.
🧠
Improves Mental Health
Areas with more trees have been shown to have lower rates of anxiety, depression, and stress among their populations.

Where We've Been Planting

From a single Earth Day planting to large community events, every milestone represents trees growing across Delaware — and a movement that keeps growing.

Deep Roots began as a simple idea — I saw the need for action in the face of environmental degradation. What started with 10 trees on Earth Day has grown into a community-wide effort. Every tree we plant proves that young people can drive real, lasting change.

501(c)(3) Nonprofit

Deep Roots Foundation was founded by a high school student who believed that environmental action doesn't wait for adulthood. What began in a Delaware neighborhood has grown into a recognized nonprofit partnered with state agencies.

Community-first — every event is designed to educate, engage, and inspire neighbors, not just add numbers to a count.
Science-driven — Trees selected with DNREC for maximum ecological impact and long-term survival.
100% transparent — all donations go directly to tree purchases and planting events. Zero administrative overhead.
Community-funded — donations from individuals, shoe drives, and community partners go directly to purchasing and planting trees.

How do I properly plant a tree?
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. Place the tree so the trunk base is level with the soil surface, backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and mulch around the base without touching the trunk to retain moisture and prevent weeds.
